We've had our Wiser working for a while now and it all ticks along rather nicely doing the basics of system control.

It would be nice to do more with it however, and since it's built on a standard Linux platform it should be perfectly possible to add additional components/daemons to run on it.

I see the software on it is built on the GPL open license and as such it's a legal obligation of this GPL license that the source code must be made available, along with the compiler and required toolchain to build the code.

Can someone from Clipsal please post the link to where this can be downloaded from or provide details on how it can be obtained in accordance with the GPL license?

    Thanks

    Hi Ariddell,

On page 3 of your Wiser Home Controller Setup Sheet that came with your Wiser, there is the GNU GPL source code offer with the URL for download, http://www.clipsal.com/cis_wiser_home_control , and also the physical media available by post if requested. The full GPL license details are also included on the Wiser_Home_Controller_Installation_Instructions version 1003 which is on the USB thumbdrive that came with the Wiser, (page 47). Note that Clipsal provides you with all the source code to the GPL, LGPL and other free and open source licensed components of the system. That of course includes the full Linux kernel source code which is based on MontaVista Linux 4.0, source code to busybox, and numerous other system utilities The total download is about 150MBytes, we're working on putting the latest release up on the web site now.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Clipsal does NOT provide source code to Clipsal's and other third party's proprietary applications and services on the system. These are applications and services which do not link to GPL applications or libraries.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Clipsal's C-Bus related applications and services are propietary and do not link to any GPL code. The web server is 3rd party proprietary. Therefore, the following will no longer work once you reflash it with your firmware:
    - PICED services
    - Wiser UI services
    - C-Bus control, logic, scheduler
    - web server

PLEASE NOTE THAT FLASHING THE UNIT WITH NON-CLIPSAL FIRMWARE INVALIDATES THE WARRANTY. Attempts to reflash the unit with original firmware will not restore the system to its original warrantied condition.

    Thanks,
    jaya

    Thanks, much appreciated.

I'd headed to the url you mention previously, but it comes up with a completely blank page.

Why don't Clipsal provide the complete package after the D-Link court case? The .img file as distributed for running on the unit is considered a single executable piece of code under the GPL license, so they are obliged to provide all component parts of that executable package to comply with the full license terms.

It's distinctly concerning that this doesn't seem to be the case, regardless of if they "link" to GPL components or not, if they're distributed as a single entity along with the GPL components they're obliged to provide the source code for them too, exactly so as to avoid functional issues such as you mention.

We see how well that worked for D-Link in court in the past when they claimed that parts of their firmware image files were not covered by the gpl, and tried to exclude them from the source..........
