    Wattsaver LED Downlights

Testing some Wattsaver LED lights currently, and thought I would share the experience, as I am trying to find LED lights that look great, working on CBUS Leading edge dimmers with 1 LED or 10 LED's per channel.

I got both the DL7-1400 and DL9-1400. Both come with the Wattsaver tranny that says it is for leading or trailing edge, but Wattsaver themselves says for CBUS use on trailing edge only, which is a pain, as I dont have a universal dimmer, just standard leading edge ones.

Tried it anyway. They are BRIGHT. So much brighter than a normal halogen, but dimming, I could only get them down to around 20%, and then that was it, I couldnt dim them to 0%.

Also, noticed some flicker when dimmed down as far as I could every so often.

Some of the best looking LED's I have tried, looks like they are really well built.

The gimble on them barely moves, I would say no more than 10 deg if that, but supposedly new square ones with better movement are coming this month.

All in all, I love them, but as they are so bright, not being able to dim them down to say 10% or 0% makes them hard to use in toilets at night etc. Also, the flickering every so often concerns me, and the fact that they are not recommended to run of leading edge dimmers, which most of the CBUS ones are.

If anyone has tested these with the Universal dimmer, let me know. They suggest a trailing edge dimmer, and we only have the standard leading edge dimmers.

    not fit for prpose

    Hi
If it says "for us on trailing edge only" then why are you surprised that they don't work properly on a leading edge dimmer? If you leave these, them most likely either the dimmer or LED driver (or both) will fail prematurely to the much advertised 50,000hr life. There are many other threads here covering this issue.

Unfortunately there are many dodgy companies trying to flog you LED lights (because they are the current fad) and don't know them selves what they can and cant do because they can't read or speak Chinese.
There are other companies making excellent products with clear proven instructions that they stand behind, products like Pierlite starburst, Lumitex barricade come to mind.

    Dimming performance

Probably a bit late, but I've been testing a bunch of LED lights & installed 4 of the Wattsaver DL9-1200 downlights over the week-end. Like you, I expected both leading and trailing edge dimmers to work, based on the documentation.

I tried them out on 4 different dimmers (not CBus however). Both the leading edge units (HPM and Arlec) resulted in heavy flickering. But the Clipsal universal and C-Thru trailing edge worked mostly OK. Neither of them would dim the light down to zero however. At maximum dimming, they were still outputting around 30% of maximum brightness.

Which is a bit of a shame as they good lights otherwise.
