Use of "inappropriate" application addresses

    I have a site where for historical reasons each network uses a different application number. I know this has never been correct or supported but it's worked and we've left well alone as changing it will be quite a big deal.

    We don't yet have any new Spacelogic devices on this site but that time will come, and the note in TK's settings that "if you have units using inappropriate addresses your C-Bus network may behave in an unexpected matter when using newer C-Bus units" is therefore a concern.

    What are the potential issues? The network numbers are all at the high end (~240 upwards) so would need the legacy option ticked in order to work with them.

    provided your application addresses are in the lighting range for the new output units i would be surprised if there would be any issues.
    As for your network addresses those that you have used should also be valid, unless SE have seriously changed the way C-Bus operates

    The Application Addresses are a means of making unique address spaces.

    Provided all the "things" using the same application address are meant to talk, AND you can configure to use the addresses, then it will all just work.

    Where this falls apart is that the application address is not just an address (which is after all just a number). It's also the language that's talked between devices in that address.

    A number of applications talk the same language (lighting) - for example "Pools, Spas, Ponds and Fountains" talks the same language as lighting.

    However "Audio Control" talks a wildly different language and if you try and have switches or dimmers on the Audio Control application, then you can expect Bad Things (tm) to happen.

    Old older sites that are only ever lighting - you can leave it alone and it will Just Work (again, tm). However.... if there's a chance to remediate it then doing so would be wise. If any newer equipment is to go into that site then remediation becomes a higher priority.

    When wasn't this supported - the use of numbers outside of recommended maybe, But I can assure you I have sites that thouasands of group address so different applications is needed. a typical way to use application numbering as different is on connected networks with bridges so it is very common to utilise additional application addresses in this manner as the old bridges could pass an application or all applications - and when you turn on office light on level 1 and it turns on light upsatirs in meeting room - it is a shitty thing - especially if someone just replaced a bridge or something. use appliactions from 48-95 which are supported lighting applications, upload_2025-8-25_12-12-5.png
