Temperature sensor probe selection

    For the new style 4 channel temperature sensor input there are three styles of sensor - tube, flat and point.

    How do you select which one to use for an application? Does it matter or do you just pick the largest tip that you can fit in the space?

    I'm thinking of mounting the sensor in a vented plastic box with the input unit behind that box. Is it safe to assume that the input unit won't generate sufficient heat to affect the readings?

    A smaller tip will have less thermal mass and therefore will respond more quickly, but other than that the different shapes are really just to allow more mounting flexibility (square is good for coupling to a flat surface but it's difficult to drill square holes so that's what the round ones are for).

    Depending on your bus voltage, the input unit itself uses between 300 and 500mW, which is enough to cause self heating if you don't give any thought to placement. In your case, putting some insulation in between and ensuring the input unit is not directly below the sensor should be enough. If not there is always the offset parameter you can use to correct the reading.
