One thing that is a bit funny, I reckon.

People (including me) will try and save a few thousand on electrical... which is actually a very specialised aspect of the project.

Yet think about say the timber framing... almost anybody can use a hammer or a nail gun - so how come the "DIYer" doesn't suggest that they do all the nailing work for the builder ?

    Just kidding :)

i am not sure if saving money is a specialisation - when a parking space sized land parcel in sydney sells for 3 million it hardly makes a bit of difference what you save on electrical. it simply wouldn't make any measureable difference.

    G'day All,
I'm a retired project manager and during the construction of a 12 storey hotel in Melb (1990's) I went through a lot of hoops to establish whether cablers needed to be licensed or not. Despite several letters to the then ACA and a ten page legal opinion I'm still in the dark. My decision was that anyone connecting to the telecommunications network is signing off and responsible for the cabling. So that bloke needs a license and big shoulders, end of story. Anyone that comes before him does not. We did however insist that the blokes fitting off were licensed and the blokes running cables must be supervised by licensed cablers just to protect our backsides.

Another point to consider is the time it takes the average bloke to run a few cables. Might take quite a bit longer than you think while an experienced bloke will have it done a lot quicker. A few hours delivering Pizzas or something may be more productive use of your time.

I know a bloke (who shall remain nameless ;-)) who wired his own place. after the wires were run he had to pull most of them out and redo them just because it was one hell of a mess. While the sparky was very impressed with the work he didn't know just how many hours went into achieving the result. I can assure you that bloke will leave running cables to those (sparkies) who can get a neat job on the first try.

As a carpenter I'd suggest you leave framing to the chippy, I've seen too many unholy messes made by D.I.Y'ers

Spend your time where it can be the most productive, planning, supervision, buying, etc, heck that'll keep you flat out anyway.

However, I'm happy that I've done it once, bugga the time and I learned a lot. If your in that category go for it but get a sparky to supervise, some out there are willing to take the risk.
