I am having problem scanning the network using the RS232-RJ45 slot on the PCI. I am unable to detect the network when using an RJ45 to DB9 converter bought from Dick Smith. I am using a straight through cat5e cable between the PCI and the converter.

Scanning the network using the DB9 connection is no problem. The only thing I find is that I have to disconnect and reconnect the C-Bus cable to the PCI unit every time I use the RJ45 connection. It seems that the PCI unit gets upset when this happens.

If it is the converter that is causing the problem, any recommendation on a particular brand I should be using?

    Thanks

I use the RJ45->DB9 cable that comes with C-Touch. Perhaps you could compare the pin connections on this cable with the Dick Smith adaptor you're using?

A couple of gotcha's with the RJ45 RS-232 connection on the PCI:

    1. DO NOT connect both the RJ45 and D-9 connectors to devices at the same time (they are just wired up in parallel internally, so having both connected at once will lead at best to unpredictable behaviour, and at worst to damage).
    2. Make sure you don't plug your RJ45 serial device into C-Bus by mistake (this is a sure fire way of cooking the transceivers in your serial port - for laptops the damage can be quite expensive)

I can not tell the pin connection layout on the converter. It looks more like an adaptor and it comes sealed and without any cables.

Do I have to do anything special in the C-Bus software may be? It is currently using the default settings of COM1 in terms of baud rate etc.

The settings required are identical regardless of the cable/connector you are using. If it's working via the DB9 plug and not the RJ45, then the problem is definitely between your serial port and the PCI. Either the adaptor you're using is not suitable (or maybe faulty), or perhaps the Cat5 patch lead has a problem.

For the sake of being thorough, the problem could also be the RJ45 socket on the PCI, but realistically I think the odds of this would be one in many millions!

Try and source a Clipsal supplied C-touch lead, if it works then it'll be obvious where the problem is.

There are several alternative pin-outs for using RS-232 on RJ-45. As Peter says, use the C-Touch cable to be sure that the pin-out is correct before you go doing anything else.

You only make this error once. But it's one way of getting a new laptop.

Does anyone have a spare C-Touch lead that they do not need? I am happy to reimburse any cost incurred in postage and handling.

    Pinouts for the cable

Geez , some of you guys really believe in beating around the bush......

I would think the easiest question to ask on this is ....

What is the pinout on the cable????

    Answer:

    RJ45 DB9
    1 1
    2 4
    3 6
    4 5
    5 3
    6 2
    7 7
    8 8
    9 is not connected

Thanks Coppo. I'll put a cable together and try again tonight.

I suppose it depends on your definition of beating around the bush.. I'd much rather get hold of the C-touch cable than fiddle around making my own! :)

there is no guarantee by using a cable for something else (unless it is proven by others prior). How do you know there are no resistors in the "adapter" or some other device.

Making the cable yourself is easy as and good practice for those who dont do it too often.

ALso, if all else fails RTFM. The pin out is in there.

Is the PCI interface a DB9M or DB9F?
