Hi I have a Clipsal c bus system with a number of LL5508D1A 8 channel dimmers installed in 2011. One of the dimmers seems to have died. No lights at all despite power ok .

I see these are obsolete now. is there a replacement equivalent that will replace this unit ? otherwise any ideas ?

    thanks

Hi Simon, The direct replacement for L5508D1A is 5508D1D,
The New Dimmer is same format, But please observe the instructions, as there is Extra Negative loop to run as the new model has Phase independent Banks.

Additionally 5508D1D requires the new Commissioning tools for programming, If you have your project for the old dimmer, then the SpaceLogic C-Bus Commissioning software has a feature to Convert your old dimmer programming to the new 5508D1D so all you need to do is transfer this into the new Dimmer, and Confirm the mode of operation of the channels, Note Channel Mode confirmation is new requirement for the new Dimmer as the 5508D1D supports Leading and Trailing edge modes of dimming.

    Quick Video to explain

thanks you very much Colin that is very useful. My overall system consists of 5 dimmers. I assume I can get away with just replacing one unit and the new 5508d1d will work alongside the old L5508D1A units ? I see that the new one has c-bus power but that it this can be switched off . also will the new commissioning tools also work with the old units ? Thanks again for your help

Yes, the new 5508D1D dimmer will work perfectly alongside your existing dimmers, so you can just replace the faulty one. However, there are a few points of difference that may or may not apply to your situation:

    1. Software Burden: The new dimmers do not have an internal software burden. If the faulty dimmer was acting as a burden to the network (only applicable if it was at unit address 1), you'll need to find another device to enable a software burden or insert a hardware burden if needed.

    2. Bus Power Supply: The new dimmer has a built-in C-Bus power supply, which can be turned on or off. By default, the power supply is off when you first buy the unit. The instructions that come with the unit show how to turn the power supply on if needed. Since the model you quoted is L5508D1A, which includes a power supply, you will likely want to enable it when installing on your site. Remember, C-Bus permits only 2000 milliamps of power on the bus, which means a maximum of 10 devices with the power supply enabled.

    3. Programming: The new commissioning tool works in conjunction with the latest version of Toolkit. When you download the latest commissioning tool, also download the latest version of Toolkit so both tools can connect to the same C-Gate service. However, do not try to program devices in both tools simultaneously. You can have your project open in both tools, but work in one tool at a time, especially with live C-Bus networks.
    Hope this helps!
