Here is some info from The CIS 2003 newsletter

We have recently found there to be an issue with ?Loss of Communications?
specifically on the Homeminder LED Keypad ( Cat # 5208 ), however this
could possibly affect the Homesafe keypads.

This problem is caused by using ?twisted pair type? cables and wiring
the ?CLK? and ?DATA? using paired conductors. This ?pairing? effectively
cancels out any transmitted signal on the paired conductors.

For the LED Keypad we recommend security type cable to be used (which
does not have twists on individual pairs). Currently it is only installers who
use CAT5 or similar constructed cables that are experiencing some
    communications problems.

To prevent this occurrence you must:
īƒ˜ Use ?Security type? cable, or
īƒ˜ Wire the ?CLK? and ?DATA? on conductors that are not paired together.

We have also seen documentation to this effect for another security manufacturers LED keypads
