This is a good question. I think it may be possible to have an option in the application so you can choose whether it communicates via C-gate or CNI. I would try to avoid two separate versions as it would create a lot of headaches.

heh. this just occurred to me also. As I run homegate I would rather a cgate interface rather then a direct to PCI version. Saves having to purchase an extra cbus interface.

    Agree
That's the same as with Philips Pronto. CNI for every device makes it work flowlessly, but makes multi-pronto system too expensive

    thank you for your work!:)

Sounds to me like getting it out there working with cgate will deliver an immediate benefit. For those who don't have / want cgate, they might have to wait a bit longer before a CNI release adds that ability.

Getting something out will also deliver valuable user feedback to you!

Great application... please sign me up for beta testing when you have either solution available..

    - a standalone embedded C-Gate server device would be nice Ashleigh

Good stuff - would also be interested in the beta. I have 14 DLT's in the house, iPhone/Touch control would be very nice too.

Actually you can make one of these very easily.

Buy an embedded PC, pretty much any architecture will do (eg PC-104, or one of the smaller ones).

Load it up with RAM, install windows or linux, and Java.

Then copy the cgate JAR file from a toolkit install onto it

    Tish-boom. Done.

cgate is a java app and will run on anything that can run java. If a linux box you will need to do some searching in here for the patches you need to do to allow java to access raw serial ports. If using a CNI then that probably won't be needed.

A number of people have run cgate on linux, and also solaris.

Like all these things there will be a small amount of hackery needed, but there are numerous reports on this forum of people who have done it and posted their cook-books of what to do.

    Iphone Itouch app

    Brad,

More than happy to test the beta version out. Have networks at our office where we / you could do as much testing as needed.
Would the app be triggering single group addresses at each time. Or can you do multiple at once.

Problem I see with cgate its yet another bit that can go wrong.

By that I mean its software running on a computer that may crash or need rebooting or otherwise mess up and stop from working.

For truly robust system that doesn't mean you have someone ringing you up saying - its doesn't work - I reckon the CNI where you are talking directly to the CBUS system is the way to go.

Merit in the approach. (You DONT want to know how much software there is in a CNI then :) )

    Update

I took on a really large contract a few weeks ago and I'm in the process of getting this up and running so I haven't been able to focus on this app at all.

I'd like to think that by April I'll have some spare time to look at finishing it off, but I can't promise anything.
