We have completed a Home Automation project about 9 months ago. We have used Clipsal C Bus DSI dimmers with ATCO TRIDONIC DSI ballast to dim tube lights. There are about 500 tube lights in the project.

We find there is a frequent failure of tubelights that are dimmed...about 30 to 35 in a month. Is there any way we can reduce the failure rate?

What is the general experience you have had with DSI and analog dimmers(0-10V)

Did you burn in the lamps?

Fluorescent lamps require a burn-in time of 100 hours BEFORE you dim them.

If you do not do this you get a high failure rate of the lamps.

If you look hard using Google you can find some references for this.

No we did not burn in the lamps. What do you suggest we do now?

Yes, once you have dimmed the lamps without the burn-in, they will never be OK. They will fail early and there is nothing you can do.

If you have lamps that are still OK you can take a chance on them and only change the ones that failed. Then do the 100 hours burn in. You may find that the lamps you did not change will still fail early.

The safest thing to do is change all the lamps, burn-in and then it will most likely be OK. This is the highest short term cost, but probably the lowest long term cost because you are less likely to go back to the site.
