Just an FYI for anyone interested.

I was down at my local Aldi on the weekend and they had the range of LED fittings on special. $3.99 for a GU10 LED and $4.99 for an E27 (Edison screw in type), I thought why not, I have nothing to lose.

Anyway, I tried the E27 globe first and it dims extremely well on a 5508D1A dimmer. It was mixed with a halogen globe so I took the halogen out to see how it performed on its own and it was exactly the same. Dimmed all the way down to about 10-15% equivalent to the halogen - low enough that I will never need to go that low as its not really usable that low.

Next was the GU10 on its own channel - and as expected it was exactly the same as the E27.

These are German made globes sold by Aldi, and I am no expert in this area, but the colour is very close to the existing (warm) and performance on the dimmers is exception considering the price.

I can't find specs on capacitance though. The manufacturers web site is muller-licht.de. Specs here - I think it is the 57059 (last column).

Anyway, very happy camper at the moment with them being so cheap and working well.

    Thought others may be interested

Aldi often surprise me with the quality vs price of some of their items.

Yes they are cheap, but often much better than I expected for what I paid.

Next time I'm picking up some pods for my very cheap, but really quite good coffee machine, I'll check out the LED globes.

    Cheers

Wow! I'm genuinely surprised at the success you have had with this. The 1A dimmer is a leading edge dimmer. LED's typically work better with trailing edge dimmers.

    Good news though :)

Hey Mick, were these on an electronic or iron core transformer?
    And if electronic, which one?

    Cheers

Hey Just to answer on Mick's behalf,

Unless he has an unusual setup the GU10 and E27 sockets are 240v rather than 12v.

    Yes, Gu10 and E27 are 240V.
