5753PERIL Capabilities

    Hi. I have a 5753PERIL and I understand these are like the L except they can accept IR commands too, is that right?

    If so, can it learn commands from ANY remote control or does it have to be a specific type?

    Finally, what else can these things be used for? Anything cool?

    5753L Has same Features excluding the IR remote and an Extra Pot for manual assignment, but this statement is also assuming your 5753L is firmware 2.4.0 - PEIRL is on the left and L is on the right.

    From memory, the remote control options are either the dedicated C-Bus Remote Control or a compatible NEC-format IR remote, although I can't recall the exact NEC requirements off the top of my head.

    The IR functionality provides access to the PEIRL's virtual keys, which opens up a range of additional control possibilities. Virtual keys can trigger scenes and perform functions that are not available directly from the occupancy or light level sensing functions.

    Apart from the IR capability, the PEIRL and PEL share the same core features, including:

    Occupancy and Lighting Functions
    • Occupancy-based control of lighting or other C-Bus groups.
    • Actions based on movement regardless of ambient light level.
    • Light-level harvesting and daylight compensation.
    • Different actions based on measured light levels.
    • Use as a "sunset switch" by triggering actions when light levels fall below a threshold.
    Corridor Linking
    The corridor linking feature can keep corridor lighting active while adjacent offices or rooms remain occupied. This is particularly useful in commercial installations where circulation areas should remain lit when nearby spaces are in use.

    Room Join
    The primary purpose of Room Join is supporting adjoining function rooms with movable walls, but it can also be used as a simple "profile" or "mode" selection mechanism.

    For example, you might configure:

    • Mode A: Sensor turns lights fully on when occupancy is detected.
    • Mode B: Sensor recalls a preset light level instead.
    There are some limitations:

    • Toolkit can sometimes make Room Join configuration a little awkward.
    • Block mapping limits how far you can take the concept.
    • If the same group address is used, you cannot have different occupancy timeout periods based on the Room Join state.
    Even with those restrictions, it can still be used to create some useful alternate operating modes.

    Block Mapping
    The unit provides 8 logic blocks, each with mapping capabilities, allowing one sensor action to affect multiple group addresses.

    One Limitation
    One thing I've always found a little frustrating is that, as far as I know, occupancy and light-level sensor actions cannot directly trigger internal scenes. Internal scene triggering is reserved for the virtual keys, which means access via the IR remote can actually be quite useful if you want to take advantage of those scene capabilities.

    Thanks for the detailed reply.

    I have scenes stored in the eDLT in the living room, can the PERIL be used to trigger those scenes?

    Versions 2.3 on support the trigger application, so these can be used to trigger scenes in an eDLT. If you have version 2 or prior you need a logic unit like a Wiser or SHAC to convert the lighting group address into a trigger control address.

    As for IR, version 2.3 on support both clipsal and NEC codes whereas version 2 and prior only support clipsal IR codes.
