Note to trial users of the 5500PACA unit with PICED software.

If you are having troubles connecting to the hardware module, it is most
probably due to the USB drivers not being installed correctly.

We have seen this typically happen due to people not accepting the USB
driver install, due to the Windows warning message about " this driver is not
    windows certified".

    you should follow this process:

    1/ Install the PICED software
It will automatically create a sub-folder in your PICED directory
called " USB to COM Bridge Driver".

    2/ connect the 5500PACA to C-Bus power.

3/ Connect the 5500PACA to Computer via USB connection.

4/ The "new hardware" wizard should appear automatically if it does not ,
go to Windows Control panel and click on "add hardware" option.

5/ When the wizard prompts you for a driver " browse" to the USB driver
    folder in your PICED folder.
Then click yes / ok as per windows prompts.

6/ Once you have done this , windows will prompt you with a message
stating "this driver is not Microsoft digitally signed",
Click on OK / continue, to continue installing the driver regardless.

7/ Once complete it should inform you that the hardware was installed
    successfully.

    ALTERNATE DRIVER UPDATE:

When looking in the windows "Device Manager", if your 5500PACA USB driver
is displayed with a large yellow question mark next to it, you will need to
    update the driver.

This can be done by right clicking on the yellow question mark, a menu will
appear with the typical options of "update driver" or "properties" select
either one and you will see further screens for updating of the "device driver".

    Do the same process as mentioned before about;
1/ When the wizard prompts you for a driver " browse" to the USB driver
    folder in your PICED folder.
Then click yes / ok as per windows prompts.

2/ Once you have done this , windows will prompt you with a message
stating "this driver is not Microsoft digitally signed",
Click on OK / continue, to continue installing the driver regardless.

3/ Once complete it should inform you that the hardware was installed
    successfully.

On Windows XP with SP 2 I get...

New Hardware Found CP2101 USB to UART Bridge Controller

I then Select Install from a list or specified location

I specify "C:\CLIPSAL\PICED\USB to Com Bridge Driver".

And I get "The hdardwar ewas not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

    I have PICED 3.1.0.

What do I need to do?

If this unit is an early field trial unit then it uses a different driver and this was included on the cd accompaning the field trial. If the unit is a production unit then it has not been programmed correctly in the factory and I suggest you contact tech support to resolve the issue.

Sounds to me like they haven't been configured correctly in the factory. The hardware is the same and there is no concerns with the unit, it's just a few identification parameters haven't be programmed. This unfortunately can only be done in the factory at this point in time. I suggest contacting tech support.

    5500PACA as USB PCI

I received my 5500PACA this afternoon and connected up to our home network as a USB PCI. Windows found the new hardware automatically and installled the drivers automatically. I just went in to Device Manager and found it on Com 9 and put that in as the port to look for the network on.It found it and it works fine. Well done on finally having a USB PCI that can also do a whole lot more.

    But richard does it say

"CP2101 USB to UART" or "Pascal Automation Controller" in device manger

Mine also installs and works perfectly.

It LOOKS like SOME PAC's went out without being completely configured and this has led to a driver mismatch. It is still being investigated and the results won't be clear for another few days.

I'll probably get in strife... but I think I have some old CP2101 drivers floating about that I can get to those who cannot make it go... If you need these drivers please private message me.

If there is enough demand we might have to do something a bit more thorough than private messaging, but lets start there.

I've just installed a CP2101-based device on my home PC, and when asked for drivers I let windows XP go find them on the Windows Update web site. It all seems to have installed OK.

Thats exactly how I got mine working. (some people will not even notice it going there (microsoft))

Should people be returning them to CIS for update. Or not worry. Seems to work fine in every other sence. Will future software (tool kit) look for a device name etc when autodetecting...

    Hi chaps

If you have a driver installed and working, then there is no need to return it. It will all be fine.

CIS will need to make sure that the next update of PICED includes both the "proper" and the "dodgy" drivers. This will ensure that PACs without the configuration set will continue to work.

Aside: for those who think use of a USB to UART converter in the product is a bit suspect... There are many ways of getting USB connectivity - this approach is simple, low cost, and very effective. It also means CIS have an off-the-shelf packaged solution which does not require growing a whole lot of new expertise in writing USB software. If properly configured, then the drivers shipped with PICED will make it all simple and transparent to use. :)

I did the same thing. PAC works via the USB, but not via CBUS (although this is not critical).

And IExplorer has errors on certain web sites and other applications are giving me a headache. I might be forced to reload the OS.

Can you be more specific? What do you mean by "not via cbus"?

This one can't be blamed on PAC. Sounds a bit like a virus. If you re-load, make sure you get your virus s/w on quickly, and make sure it's running before you let an internet connection near the machine for loading any updates.

Average time for an unpatched windows XP machine to get infected is quoted around the place as about 20 minutes. So be careful!

In Program Options -> Connections -> PC Connection to Unit.

That is not what I am saying. I downloaded a few updates from Microsoft at the same time as the drivers for the CP2101. And after the update I had issues with IE, and I ended up loading Netscape. The problem is with one of the Microsoft updates, and I am not blaiming Clipsal and/or PAC for that.

    Hi again everybody

For those who have a PAC with the mis-configured USB port, you can use these drivers: http://www.clipsal.com/cis/cp2101.php3

The configuration foul-up is being addressed - you might find they are difficult to order for a couple of days while the existing stock is corrected. All new units will be set up properly.

The drivers above are only intended as an aid to help out those who cannot use Windows Update to download the latest & greatest, and soon the whole issue will have gone away.

    :)

We have every intention of getting the PAC driver signed, but we are waiting to make sure there are no gotchas as it's not something you want to pay for twice! (Any change requires us to resubmit the driver to M$)
