5000CTC Not powering up

Hi,

I have a 5000CTC with a faulty power supply, I've replaced it with a generic +5VDC Power Supply but nothing happens. The network LEDs are the only thing illuminated. Is the CTC fussy about the voltage as the power supply is only supplying 4.7v underload. Any assistance would be appreciated.

You really should be using the proper power supply.

The CTC is *very* fussy about getting the right voltage, and it needs a good solid 5A supply. The voltage it needs depends on the model, some of the earlier ones needed a higher voltage than some of the later ones.

If its not starting, you almost certainly don't have enough volts (some models may require as much as 5.7 V - AT THE TERMINALS ON THE CTC not on the output of the supply) - at 5A you need to allow for the losses due to cable resistance.

As to which model you have and what supply it needs, It Depends.

You really should be getting a replacement supply from Clipsal. If you use a generic, make sure it has appropriate safety ratings.

If you can't or won't get a proper supply, then if you can, wind up the input volts to about 5.2 to 5.5, and see if it starts. If it does, then it should have a 5.7 V input. In doing this experiment, don't put the input above 5.5V because thats the limit for the models that don't have the higher input. Be (a bit) like Elmer Fudd: Be Vewy vewy care-wfull when fiddling about like this.

(Why the high input, you might ask? Well as far as I can remember, some models have a big front end reverse polarity protection diode and this drops about 0.6 to 0.7 V.)
