I have run out of serial and usb ports, but I have a free parallel port? Hmmm... how about SCSI that would be cool. Oh ... I know.... wifi .... yeh I want wifi, but a backup IR port would be good ... you know, just in case. :D

Serial - many (no, make that just about all platforms except the PC and Mac) control platforms have no USB port.

I'd say serial... usb to serial adaptors are a dime a dozen these days. May even be worth including a known good adaptor in the package (though this would add to the base line cost).
